The Castillo de San Marcos, built 1672-1695, served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire, guarding St. Augustine, the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States, and also protecting the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain. The park consists of the original historic Castillo fortress itself with its attendant grounds, some 25 total acres.

Browse an entire city block full of history. Check
out a sixteenth century hospital and cemetery. The
area is known for its beautiful gardens and
courtyards as well as the 9 historic houses located

One place you have to check out is Florida’s Oldest
House. Built and occupied since the 1600’s, this
house is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial
dwelling in Florida. Check out the gardens, outdoor
kitchen, museum, and all the great quarters inside.
You’ll learn a lot about what life was like in the
early 1700’s.

this recreated 18th century village. The Spanish
Quarter museum is a living history museum where you
can watch costumed interpreters relive and act out
