Mission of Nombre de Dios
Mission of Nombre de Dios is a historically and
spiritually significant place in the Old City that
is popular with a
lot of the vacationers that come to the city to escape. The St Augustine Mission of Nombre de
Dios is located on the same sacred grounds on which the
first Spanish settlers walked and worshipped,
proclaiming the lands for Spain and the Church. More
than 400 years ago, on September 8, 1565, Pedro
Menendez de Aviles landed in St Augustine and, to
commemorate the date, he ceremoniously knelt and
presented a wooden cross given to him by Father
Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, the chaplain of
the expedition. After this moment, Fr. Lopez opened
the first parish and the first Mass in the Old City
was given at America's First Mission, the Mission of Nombre de Dios. There are numerous chapels, shrines
and places of spiritual reflection all about the
grounds of the St Augustine Mission Nombre de Dios
and visitors to the grounds can walk, pray, and
enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds all around this
sacred location.
Several places of interest are all a part of the
grounds of the Mission of Nombre de Dios. Chapels
such as the Prince of Peace Church, the Chapel of Our
Lady of La Leche and historically sacred places such
as the St Augustine Great Cross, and the shrine of
Our Lady of Guadalupe can all be visited by walking
the grounds of the Mission of Nombre de Dios. The
Prince of Peace Church was built in 1965 to
celebrate the St Augustine Mission and its 400th
Anniversary. Inside the Prince of Peace church is a
tiny chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima and a
statue reminds us of the historical apparitions of
the Blessed Mother that appeared in Fatima,
Portugal.
Many visitors to the Old City that like to take time
out of their day to look inward visit the St
Augustine Mission of Nombre de Dios and enjoy a self
guided tour. Along the way, you will see a bronze
statue of Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales,
chaplain for the excursion. After Menendez landed,
he dedicated the St Augustine Mission and named it
Mission of Nombre de Dios and set Father Lopez as
its first parish priest. Also on the grounds is the
Great Cross, a massive stainless steel 208-foot
cross erected to serve as visual reminder of the
"Beacon of Faith" as they make their way through the Matanzas River and Inlet.
Known for its serene and peaceful grounds, the
Mission of Nombre de Dios is a wonderful place to
